The Thai base
Stance, the teep and the round kick: the tools you will use most, and the way to stand so they work.
- Muay Thai stance: Muay Thai guide FreeA tall, upright stance with a light lead leg, ready to kick, check and clinch.
- The teep: Muay Thai guide FreeThe push kick: your range finder, your defence and your first kick.
- The round kick: Muay Thai guide FreeThe Thai kick: turn the hip over and swing through the target with the shin.
Checks and knees
How to meet a kick without taking it, how to hold the range, and your first knee.
- Checking kicks: Muay Thai guide ProLift the shin to meet the kick. The shin is the shield.
- The long guard: Muay Thai guide ProA guard with an extended lead arm that holds the range and stops the clinch.
- The straight knee: Muay Thai guide ProDrive the knee up and forward into the body, with the hips behind it.
Elbows and the clinch
The short-range weapons. Elbows are shadow work unless a coach is there, and the clinch needs a partner.
- The lead elbow: Muay Thai guide ProA short, slicing strike for close range. Shadow only until a coach is with you.
- The rear elbow: Muay Thai guide ProThe cross turned into an elbow: powerful, and for shadow work first.
- The plum clinch: Muay Thai guide ProThe double-collar tie: control the head, control the fight.
- Knees from the clinch: Muay Thai guide ProPull the head and drive the knee to the body. Pads and light control only.
Combinations
The lead-leg kick, punches that set up kicks, and full Thai rounds with every tool you have learned.
- The switch kick: Muay Thai guide ProA small, fast swap of the feet turns your lead leg into a full round kick.
- Punches into kicks: Muay Thai guide ProLet the hands make them cover, then kick where they are open.
- Thai rounds: Muay Thai guide ProFull shadow rounds with every tool: teeps, kicks, knees, checks and elbows in the air.
Still to come
- Clinch fighting. Winning the inside position once the plum is not enough.
- Catching and countering. Taking the opponent's kick away from them and making them pay for it.
Who it's for
Beginners, and anyone who wants to tidy up the basics. You don't need a gym, a partner or any kit, although some lessons are better with a partner.
Safety
Combat sports training is hard on the body. Warm up, stay within your limits and check with a doctor first if you have a health condition. Practise in a clear space and stop if you feel pain or dizziness. Learn partner work only under a qualified coach.
