Fighting a southpaw: Muay Thai guide
Opposite stances change the angles of every kick and punch.
A southpaw stands with the right foot forward. Your lead foot meets their lead foot, and the angles change. Your jab meets their lead shoulder, and their rear kick comes at your open side.
Win the outside foot position, so your lead foot is outside theirs. Kick the lead leg and body, and use the teep to hold the range. Expect the left kick to your right side and check it.
Key points
- Step your lead foot outside theirs.
- Kick their lead leg often.
- Use the jab to the body and face.
- Expect their rear kick to your open side.
- Check it and counter.
- Pivot off the line after landing.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Fighting inside their lead foot. Keep the outside position.
- Ignoring the open-side kick. Check it every time.
- Standing still. Move on an angle.
