Situational wrestling: Wrestling guide
Start from set positions and wrestle to a clear goal.
Situational rounds start from a fixed position with a goal: escape, ride out, score from a collar tie, finish a single against the edge. They let you practise the exact moments that decide matches.
Because both wrestlers know the start, you can focus on the decision rather than the setup. A round lasts 30 to 60 seconds and ends with a reset.
Pick the positions you lose most in live goes and drill those more.
Key points
- Pick positions from your weak points: bottom, an underhook against you, a stuffed shot.
- Give the round a goal for each wrestler.
- Reset after each point and switch roles.
- Increase resistance as you improve.
- Track what you win and lose and adapt.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Ignoring the goal. Wrestle to the goal so the round teaches you something.
- Only drilling strengths. Drill your weak positions the most.
- Going 100 percent. Match the intensity to the position. Too hard and nobody learns.
