Mat etiquette and conditioning demands: Wrestling guide
How to be a good partner, and the conditioning that live wrestling demands.
Good partners get good training. Mat etiquette is simple: be clean, be careful and be honest about intensity.
Wrestling is also one of the most physically demanding sports. Rounds are short but intense, and you need strength endurance, a strong neck and good recovery between efforts.
Build your engine with a mix of interval work, strength training and rest.
Key points
- Clean kit, trimmed nails, no jewellery. Wash after every session.
- Greet your partner, agree intensity and thank them after.
- Never use a technique you cannot control in training.
- Intervals of 30 to 60 seconds hard match-like effort.
- Eat, drink and sleep enough to recover. Take rest days.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Training dirty. Dirty kit spreads skin infections.
- Spiking partners. Control your throws and lower your partner to the mat.
- Skipping rest. Recovery is when you adapt.
