Live goes with a coach: Wrestling guide
Full live wrestling under supervision, and how to learn from it.
Live goes are where everything comes together. You wrestle at match intensity against a partner who is also trying to win. The coach watches, stops the round for safety and gives feedback.
Live work has to be earned. Only go live once your technique, falls and control are solid. Keep sessions short and build volume gradually.
Stay in your own health limits. If you are injured, concussed or unwell, you do not go live.
Key points
- Live rounds are 2 to 3 minutes with rest between.
- Match your partner's level. Do not use full strength on a beginner.
- Tap early to chokes and joint locks, and stop at once when a partner taps.
- Use a different partner each round for different styles.
- After head contact or any sign of concussion, stop and see a medical professional.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Going all out against much smaller or newer partners. Adjust the intensity to your partner. Learn from the round, do not dominate.
- Not tapping. Tap early. A tap is a reset, not a loss.
- Training through a head injury. Stop and get medical advice. Do not return until cleared.
