Go-with-flow rounds: Wrestling guide
Wrestle at a controlled pace to practise reading and reacting.
Flow rounds are the bridge between drilling and live wrestling. Both wrestlers work at about half speed, attacking and defending with technique. Nobody is trying to win.
The goal is to practise reading your partner and finding openings without the pressure of competing. You learn faster because you can see what is happening.
Agree the intensity before you start and keep to it. If your partner speeds up, slow the pace back down.
Key points
- Half speed, full technique. If you cannot do it slowly, you cannot do it fast.
- Let your partner finish some of their moves so you see the whole sequence.
- Talk between rounds. Say what you saw and what you tried.
- Keep your breathing steady and relax your shoulders.
- Stop if anyone gets hurt or the pace is too hard.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Racing to win. Flow rounds are for learning. Save your hard effort for live goes.
- Staying silent. Short feedback between rounds doubles what you learn.
- Muscling through. Use technique. If you are forcing a move, slow down and fix the setup.

Combat sports training is hard on the body. Warm up, stay within your limits and check with a doctor first if you have a health condition. Practise in a clear space and stop if you feel pain or dizziness. Learn partner work only under a qualified coach.
