Finishing on the edge: Wrestling guide
Finish shots that go off the line, with limited space and pressure.
Real wrestling happens near edges, whether it is a line on a mat or a cage fence. When you cannot circle out, you must finish where you are.
Edge finishes use short steps and close hips. Instead of running the corner, you step your head in, tuck the leg and trip or lift.
These finishes are done at speed on a mat with a coach present.
Key points
- Stay tight to the leg so they cannot post on the edge.
- Use short steps. Long steps push you out of the area.
- Trip the free leg with your foot or lift the held leg.
- Keep your head on the inside so you cannot be pushed out.
- Land on top in control.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Long steps toward the edge. You will run yourself out. Take short steps.
- Letting go to reset. Keep the leg until you have the finish.
- Landing on your knees. Land on your feet and stay over them.
