Period strategy and game plan: Wrestling guide
How to plan each period and adapt to the score.
A game plan is simple: what you want to score with, what you must stop, and how you will respond to the score. Overthinking in a match is worse than no plan.
Break the match into periods. The first is for reading and scoring your first point. The middle is for building control. The last is for finishing or holding on.
Scout your opponent if you can. Watch for their favourite shot and their weak position.
Key points
- Pick two or three go-to attacks and one escape you trust.
- Know your opponent's best move and have a counter ready.
- Score first if you can. A lead lets you wrestle with less pressure.
- If you are ahead, keep attacking rather than stalling.
- If behind, take smart risks, not wild ones.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- No plan. Go in with two attacks and one escape you trust.
- Plan too complicated. Keep it to a few lines.
- Stalling with a lead. Keep attacking. Stalling draws penalties.
