Competition day: Wrestling guide
Routine, warm-up, nerves and what to bring.
Competition day is much easier with a routine. Plan your travel, food, kit and warm-up so there is nothing to decide when nerves are high.
Compete at your natural weight. Follow your coach and a qualified professional on any weight questions.
Nerves are normal. They mean you care. Use breathing and a familiar routine to channel them.
Key points
- Pack the night before: kit, shoes, headgear if used, water, snacks, spare kit.
- Eat familiar food a few hours before. Do not try new food on the day.
- Warm up so you are sweating and sharp by your match, not earlier.
- Use slow breathing to settle nerves.
- Listen to your corner between periods.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Warming up too early. Time your warm-up to finish just before your match.
- New food or kit. Use things you have tried in training.
- Fighting the nerves. Accept them and breathe. They are part of the sport.

Combat sports training is hard on the body. Warm up, stay within your limits and check with a doctor first if you have a health condition. Practise in a clear space and stop if you feel pain or dizziness. Learn partner work only under a qualified coach.
