Takedown to control: MMA guide
Land on top, stay on top, and settle into a position instead of scrambling.
A takedown that ends with a scramble does little. The first second on the floor decides who is on top. You need to land in a position and then control it.
The sequence is land, pin the hips, clear the legs and settle. Everything after that is strikes or submissions.
Key points
- Land with your weight on the opponent. Your chest should be heavy on their chest or hips.
- Pin the hips first. If they cannot turn, they cannot stand.
- Clear the legs. Slide a knee across or pass to the side.
- Keep your head up and your hands controlling the arms.
- Be patient. A secure position is worth more than a fast one.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Landing light and jumping around. Land heavy and stay connected.
- Passing without pinning. Control the hips before you try to pass.
- Chasing a submission too early. Settle the position first.
