Clinch to takedown: MMA guide
Use an underhook and a lowered level to turn a clinch into a takedown.
In the clinch you do not shoot from range. You attack from inside, with your hands already on the opponent. A body lock or a single leg from the underhook is slower than a shot but harder to stop.
These takedowns land a person on the floor from a standing hold. Work them with a coach until the landing is safe.
Key points
- Underhook first. Head on the hook side, chest tight.
- Change levels by bending your knees, not your back.
- Body lock: hands locked around the opponent's waist, hips tight to theirs.
- Single leg from the clinch: drop your level on the underhook side and pick the near leg.
- Finish by turning the opponent. Do not lift them straight up.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Lifting straight up. Turn the hips. The opponent's body should go across yours.
- Dropping your head into the knee. Keep your head tight to the side and your chin tucked.
- Rushing without the underhook. Win the inside first.
