Body lock and inside trip: Wrestling guide
Lock the body, close the distance and trip the leg out from under them.
From an underhook or a hug you can lock your hands around the body. The body lock holds them against your chest so they cannot hip away, and from there you can trip, lift or turn them.
The inside trip hooks the inside of their ankle with your foot as you drive your chest into theirs. Their weight goes backward over their trapped leg.
This is takedown work on a partner. Do it on a mat with a coach present.
Key points
- Lock above the hips with your hands, clasped or gripping your wrist. Keep your head tight to their chest.
- Hips in. Your belt should be against theirs so they cannot create space.
- Reach your trip foot behind their heel on the inside. Do not kick it.
- Drive your chest forward and down on a diagonal. The trip is a push, not a lift.
- Land on top in control with your chest on theirs, then work to side control.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Hands low on the thighs. Lock on the body above the hips. A low lock gives them room to sprawl.
- Kicking at the leg. Hook it and push with your chest. A kick throws you off balance.
- Falling backwards with them. Stay on top by driving your chest and following the fall.
