Wall walk and getting off the cage: MMA guide
Stand up with your back to the fence by walking up it, and stay safe while you do.
If you are sitting against the fence with an opponent in front, you cannot easily hip-escape out. The wall walk uses the fence as a support to stand up. You face the opponent, put your back against the cage and walk your feet in while pushing your body up the wall.
It works because the opponent cannot easily pull you down while your back is flat to the fence. Success depends on controlling the opponent's wrists or head while you rise.
Key points
- Sit with your back against the fence and your feet under your hips.
- Control the opponent's wrists or head so they cannot follow with strikes.
- Walk your feet in toward your hips and push up the wall with your back and legs.
- Rise at the same speed as your hands. If the opponent lifts, stay square to the fence.
- Face the opponent when you arrive at standing. Your guard is already up.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Turning your back to the opponent. Keep your chest toward them. The wall is behind you, not beside you.
- Standing with no control of the hands. Pin the opponent's wrists or head as you rise.
- Rising and staying on the fence. Move to an underhook and circle away.
