Reviewing your sparring: Kickboxing guide
Turn each round into a list of things to fix.
Experience alone does not make you better. Reviewing does. A short, honest review after each sparring session shows patterns that you miss when you are in the middle of a round.
Keep it simple. Write three things that worked, three that did not, and one thing to change next time. If you can, film a round and watch it with your coach.
Key points
- Review within a day, while you still remember.
- Look for patterns: kicks you got caught on, punches you did not see, habits when tired.
- Be honest about what the opponent did well. That is the information you need.
- Pick one thing to fix. A list of ten things changes nothing.
- Take rest days seriously. Recovery is when the lessons settle.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Reviewing only what went well. The mistakes are the useful part. Write them down.
- Trying to fix everything. Choose one change per session.
- Skipping rest. Rest and sleep are where gains settle. Plan them like training.
